There’s a special quality to sunset in Maine that I tried to capture in this series of mini paintings. How the vivid neon orange is highlighted by the deep darkness of the trees, which are in their turn outlined by the setting sun; how the same vivid orange fades and ultimately becomes a beautiful indigo blue.
I saw all this as I walked to the top of the hill next door to my home, was appropriately gobsmacked, and immediately came home to depict it in this series.
Pastel on sanded pastel paper, 3.5 x 2.5 ″.
Painting minis is one of the joys of my life! It gives me the chance to play with painting on a tiny scale… I can try many variations; different underpaintings; different papers and pastels to get all sorts of different effects. So much fun!
